The King Rippers is a Raleigh-based sextet of accomplished veteran blues and jazz musicians led by ex-Squirrel Nut Zippers trombonist/vocalist Dave Wright. Other members are David Andrews (guitar and banjo), Eric Hulsey (tuba), Carl Blackwell (drums), Bob Nery (reeds), and Greg Cagle (trumpet). The band’s eclectic repertoire encompasses New Orleans street music, jazz/funk/gospel, calypso, swing, R&B, and the early jazz of Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong, played in a genre-bending style that is energetic, fun, infectious, and thoroughly danceable.
